Abstract

The lacquered chariots unearthed from the Gujun site in Xingtang,Hebei Province,provide crucialmaterial evidence for studying the chariot system of the Eastern Zhou Dynasty.However,upon excavation,the lacquered carriage bodies had deteriorated into fragile lacquer-soil composites,posing significant conservation challenges.This study focuses on the remains of the lacquer film from Chariot No.3 in Chariot and Horse Pit No.2 and its surrounding burial soil.Techniques such as microscopic observation,scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy(SEM-EDS),infrared spectroscopy(IR),Raman spectroscopy,dynamic vapor sorption(DVS),X-ray diffraction(XRD),and X-ray fluorescence(XRF)were employed to analyze the preservation state,composition,and environmental stability of the lacquer film,as well as the mineral composition,chemical indicators,and soluble salts of the soil.Results show that the lacquer is urushi,with cinnabar as the red pigment.The lacquer film is severely corroded,exhibiting extensive porosity and long cracks;the white needle-like crystals on its surface are anorthite,and the film's hygroscopicity is as high as 19.5%.The burial soil primarily consists of minerals such as quartz and anorthite,with a pH of 8.3.Soluble salts are mainly NaCl,CaSO₄,and CaCl₂,with a total salt content of approximately 0.17%and a saturated moisture content of 9.51%.This research explores the relationship between the decay state of the lacquer film and soil corrosion,preliminarily elucidates the formation causes of the lacquer-soil composites,and provides important scientific support for the conservation of the lacquered chariots unearthed from the chariot and horse pits at the Gujun site in Xingtang.
