Between Succession and Change:A Brief Account of Astronomical Institutions and Officials in the Five Dynasties

Abstract
In the politically volatile Five Dynasties period,astronomical officials,who served as the crucial intermediaries between the celestial and human realms,saw their evolving official system acquire distinct political and cultural significance.By systematically examining the changes in the names of astronomical institutions,the establishment of official posts,and the relationship between internal and external astronomical agencies,this study finds that these institutions exhibited a transitional character of"inheriting from the Tang and paving the way for the Song."This was manifested mainly in the alternating use of"Sitianjian"(Imperial Astronomical Bureau)and"Sitiantai"(Astronomical Observatory)as institutional names,the retention of Tang-era official structures,and the increasing institutionalization and specialization of astronomical functions within the Hanlin Academy.Concurrently,notable characteristics marked the astronomical official corps of the time:in terms of composition,besides traditional hereditary families and recruited experts(daizhao),it incorporated founding meritorious officials and retained staff from preceding dynasties;frequent transfers from military posts into these roles reflected the infiltration of regional military power into the central bureaucratic system;and functionally,the emphasis shifted toward military prognostication and the consolidation of imperial authority,while the interpretation of celestial phenomena to legitimize new dynasties was downplayed.关键词
