Characteristics and Formation Mechanism of Clustered Landslides Induced by Typhoon and Heavy Rainfall in the Huanan Granite Area,China:A Case Study From"7.27"Clustered Landslides in Zixing City,Hunan

Abstract
On July 27,2024,extreme rainfall associated with Typhoon Gaemi triggered numerous landslides and debris flows in the granite terrain of Zixing City,Hunan Province,causing severe casualties and property damage.The towns of Bamianshan and Zhoumensi in the northeastern part of Zixing City were particularly affected.This study aims to clarify the characteristics of such clustered landslides,reveal their rainfall-triggering mechanisms,and propose appropriate disaster prevention and mitigation strategies.Through field investigations,literature reviews,data analysis,and theoretical considerations,the disaster is analyzed from four perspectives:triggering factors,hazard-causing bodies,disaster-bearing bodies,and superimposed effects of vegetation.The results show that clustered landslides in granite regions are characterized by initiation at relatively high elevations,sudden onset,concealment,and compound hazards.While building damage exhibited a degree of randomness,houses situated at gully outlets often suffered multiple-directional impacts,leading to more severe destruction.Vegetation with shallow root systems,such as Chinese fir and moso bamboo,with their horizontally growing root systems,loosens the soil,promotes rainwater infiltration and facilitates slope failure.Once uprooted,this vegetation is entrained within the sliding mass,increasing its destructive power.The concentrated outbreak of such landslides complicated early identification and warning.Additionally,continuous heavy rainfall contributed to casualties even during emergency evacuations,highlighting the need for strategies such as establishing temporary shelters..Measured data and theoretical analysis indicate that the looseness of granite residual soil or completely weathered layers serves as the predisposing factor,while the extremity of the rainstorm acts as the direct trigger.By elucidating the characteristics and mechanisms of the"7.27"clustered landslides,this study provides a reference for hazard investigation and research in similar granite regions.关键词
