Abstract

Objectives:The mechanical properties of single-phase B4C are limited,and its fracture toughness is poor.To enhance the mechanical properties of B4C-based multiphase ceramics,the diamond particles are added as the second phase to reinforce and toughen the B4C ceramics.The influence of sintering temperature on the mechanical properties and microstructure of B4C/D multiphase ceramics in the Si-Ti additive system is explored using spark plasma sintering(SPS)technology.Methods:Multiphase ceramic samples are obtained by SPS sintering under a pressure of 50 MPa and five sintering temperatures ranging from 1 400 to 1 600℃,with B4C as the matrix,diamond with a mass fraction of 20%as the reinforcing phase,and Si and Ti with mass fractions of 15%and 5%,respectively,as sintering assistants.The densities of the samples are measured by the Archimedes displacement method and their consistency is calculated.The microstructure and phase composition of the multiphase ceramic samples are investigated by scanning electron mi-croscopy and X-ray diffraction.The hardness of the specimens is tested by Vickers hardness tester,and their fracture toughness is calculated based on the crack propagation length.Results:The sintering temperature significantly affects the densification behavior and the interface structure of B4C/D multiphase ceramics.When the temperature rises to 1 550℃,the Si-Ti additive system promotes particle rearrangement and interface wetting through a liquid-phase sinter-ing mechanism,effectively suppressing diamond graphitization.At this point,the comprehensive performance of the material is optimal,with the consistency,the Vickers hardness,the flexural strength,and the fracture toughness of 94.7%,35.6 GPa,361 MPa,and 6.43 MPa·m1/2,respectively.Conclusions:The Si-Ti additive achieves densification and toughening of B4C/D multiphase ceramics under the SPS condition of 1 550℃.The multiphase ceramics can be ap-plied in lightweight protection fields such as bulletproof plates.
