Abstract

Corrosion of steel bars is the primary cause for performance degradation of reinforced concrete(RC)structures.Under time-varying environments,non-uniform corrosion of steel bars inside concrete will happen,which will lead to stochastic performance degradation of RC members and the transformation of failure modes,thus bringing significant uncertainty in predicting the mechanical performance of an RC member.Therefore,in this paper,a method based on Bayesian updating was proposed to predict normal-section bending bearing capacities of corroded RC beams.Prior distribution of corrosion degree was estimated from measured samples while likelihood function was established by combining the theoretical formula and observed data for short-term bending stiffness,then posterior distribution was obtained from Bayesian updating.Sampling corrosion degree from the updated posterior distribution,the corresponding probability distribution of normal-section bending bearing capacities could be obtained by utilizing the random stress-strain relationship of corroded steel bars.Meanwhile,the bending test for eight corroded RC beams were conducted and results showed that both the bending capacity and the bending stiffness of a corroded RC beam decreased with developing of corrosion,the failure mode might transform while corrosion reached a critical level.The relevance between bending stiffness and corrosion degree validates the feasibility of establishing likelihood function from bending stiffness.Comparing the calculation and the experiment results for eight testing beams in this paper and another 28 testing beams from the literature,the average value of the ratio of the predicted mean to the experimental value was 1.002 6 and the correlation coefficient was 0.952 5,it was demonstrated that the proposed method is reliable.
