Sea-land Integration:The Spread and Transmutation of Mazu Belief in the Baihe River Basin of Henan Province during the Qing Dynasty

Abstract
The Mazu belief in the Baihe River Basin is one of the few coastal beliefs preached and practiced in the Central Plains region.Since the landing in the Baihe River Basin during the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty,the Mazu belief spread to the surrounding areas with Nanyang and Dengzhou as the center.Over time,it integrated with the local culture of the Central Plains,forming a unique cultural belief system that blends elements of both coastal and Central Plains traditions.Several factors contributed to the transformation of Mazu belief in the Baihe River Basin during the early Qing Dynasty,including the region's environmental characteristics,the practical needs of local people,the cultural identity of the Min-ying people(Fujian migrants),the Qing government's official promotion of Mazu belief,and the utilitarian demands of coastal merchant groups,particularly those from Fujian.These elements played a crucial role in the evolution of Mazu belief in the region.The transmutation of Mazu belief and the cultural phenomena it reflects offer a microcosm of the broader process by which outside cultures adapt and evolve within local cultural contexts.This process not only provides insight into the spread and transmutation of Mazu belief in the Central Plains but also offers a new historical perspective for understanding the formation of the Chinese nation's cultural community consciousness and its diverse folk beliefs.关键词
