Abstract

The water footprint quantifies the direct and indirect consumption of water resources by human activities,providing a scientific basis for sustainable development decision-making of water resource management and environmental protection and helping to identify hidden water use,promote water-saving awareness,and solve water crises.Accurately quantifying the water footprint and determining the flow path of the water footprint are important steps in optimizing urban water-saving strategies.This article adopted a top-down input-output method to quantify the intensity of industrial and agricultural water use in Guangzhou City.Through the analysis and research on the quantitative results of the industrial and agricultural water footprint in Guangzhou City,an attempt was made to find targeted directions and paths for water conservation in various sectors in Guangzhou City.The research results show that:①In terms of water-saving effectiveness,Guangzhou's industrial water-saving effect has been significant in the past five years.From 2017 to 2022,the outflow ratio of industrial virtual water has decreased from 18.87%to 12.32%,and the water consumption per 10 000 yuan of industrial added value in Guangzhou City has decreased from 67(m3/ten thousand yuan)in 2017 to 34.5(m3/ten thousand yuan)in 2022.The water efficiency in the industrial sector of Guangzhou City continues to improve.②In terms of industrial water footprint structure,the water footprint of the food and tobacco industry and the equipment manufacturing industry is relatively high.Among them,the food and tobacco industry mainly relies on indirect water footprint,reaching 294.137 9 million m3,with lower direct water footprint consumption.This indicates the involvement of a significant amount of implicit water resources in the production process of goods or services.The equipment manufacturing industry consumes a significant amount of both direct and indirect water during the production process,163.918 5 million m3 and 71.861 3 million m3,respectively,reflecting their high-intensity use of water resources in various production processes.In addition,the water footprint of the chemical and textile sectors is also at a high level,while the overall water footprint of other sectors is relatively small,and their impact on the city's water resource consumption is relatively limited.③In terms of water-saving suggestions,we can vigorously promote the development of agriculture,food and tobacco industry,and related industrial chains.The equipment manufacturing industry has a high direct and indirect water footprint and should be encouraged to move towards a direction of less virtual water inflow and higher added value.
