Abstract

This experiment aimed to investigate the effects of adding Lonicera japonica compound extract to drinking water on the production performance,egg quality,and serum antioxidant indexes of Hy-Line Gray laying hens during the late laying period.A total of 3 240 healthy 76-week-old Hy-Line Gray laying hens with similar body condition and laying performance were selected and randomly divided into four groups,with six replicates per group and 135 hens per replicate.All groups were fed the basal diet.The control group(group CON)received normal drinking water throughout the day,while groups H1,H2,and H3 were provided with drinking water containing 0.5%,0.7%,and 0.9%Lonicera japonica compound extract,respectively,for 10 hours per day,with normal drinking water during the remaining time.The pre-trial period was five days,and the formal trial period was 56 days.The results showed that compared with group CON,the dirty egg rate in groups H1,H2,and H3 was extremely reduced during 1 to 28 days(P<0.01),and the sandy egg rate in groups H1,H2,and H3 was extremely reduced during 29 to 56 days(P<0.01).On the 28th day,the eggshell strength in groups Hl,H2,and H3 was extremely increased(P<0.01).On the 56th day,the egg shape index in groups H1,H2,and H3 was significantly decreased(P<0.05).On the 56th day,the serum malondialdehyde(MDA)content in group H1 was significantly reduced(P<0.05),and the serum catalase(CAT)activity in group H2 was extremely increased(P<0.01).The study shows that adding Lonicera japonica compound extract to drinking water can effectively reduce the dirty egg rate and sandy egg rate,improve eggshell strength,and enhance the antioxidant capacity of laying hens during the late laying period,and the recommended addition level is 0.5%.
