Abstract

In order to promote the engineering application of the pressure swing adsorption(PSA)method,and better meet the potential demand for crude helium purification from natural gas,experimental studies were conducted using commonly available commercial adsorbents and a mature PSA process on the crude helium from a specific facility.The vacuum pressure swing adsorption(VPSA)method was used to achieve the separation of helium from oxygen and nitrogen impurities.The effects of adsorption time on the content of oxygen and nitrogen impurities,helium yield and the concentration ratio of oxygen and nitrogen impurities were investigated.Using medium Si/Al ratio molecular sieve adsorbentsⅠand low Si/Al ratio molecular sieve adsorbentsⅡas materials,with a feed gas rate of≤2 m3/h and an operating pressure of≤2 MPa,the helium product from adsorbent II met the impurity specifications for 99.999%high-purity helium(O2 content is less than 1×10-6,N2 content is less than 2×10-6),with a helium yield of about 75%~80%.Oxygen and nitrogen exhibited similar concentration behavior.Adsorbent systems mainly composed of zeolite adsorbents for hydrogen purification can also be used for helium purification via PSA.Since zeolite adsorbents have a much lower adsorption capacity for oxygen than for nitrogen,adsorbents with higher impurity adsorption capacities should be selected in practical appliations to ensure product quality.The VPSA method can realize the effective separation of helium from oxygen and nitrogen impurities.This experimental study provides guidance and data support for the process selection in the construction of crude helium purification facilities.
