Exploring the clinical advantages and rules of acupoint selection with the integration of acupuncture and medication in treating irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea based on data mining

Abstract
Objective To investigate the clinical advantages,combination approaches,acupoint selection and meridian affiliation patterns,and core prescriptions of acupuncture combined with medication for irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea(IBS-D)using data mining technology,with the aim of providing evidence-based rationale and application strategies for this integrated approach in clinical practice.Methods A systematic search was conducted for clinical research literature on acupuncture-medication combination therapy for IBS-D published from January 1,2004,to May 31,2025,in the following databases:Embase,Ovid,PubMed,Web of Science,CNKI,WanFang,VIP,and SinoMed.Retrieved studies were screened for inclusion.Frequency statistics were employed to analyze clinical advantages and acupoint usage frequency.Association rule analysis was performed using SPSS Modeler 18.0,cluster analysis using SPSS Statistics 27.0,and a complex network model was constructed using Gephi 0.10 to identify core acupoints and compatibility patterns.Results A total of 83 articles were included.The combination of acupuncture and medication demonstrated significant advantages in improving IBS-D clinical symptoms and signs,modulating brain-gut peptide levels,and regulating mood disorders.The included prescriptions involved 40 acupoints with a total application frequency of 536 times.The top three most frequently used acupoints were Tianshu(ST 25),Zusanli(ST 36),and Taichong(LR 3).The Stomach Meridian of Foot-Yangming was the most frequently utilized meridian.The core acupoint combination identified was Tianshu(ST 25)-Zusanli(ST 36).Among the specific acupoint categories,the Five-Shu points had the highest application frequency.Cluster analysis yielded four effective clusters.Complex network analysis revealed that the core acupoints could be categorized into two clusters:Cluster 1 emphasized intestinal regulation and mind regulation,while Cluster 2 reflected the anterior-posterior acupoint pairing principle.Conclusion Acupuncture combined with medication significantly improves gastrointestinal function and alleviates emotional disturbances in IBS-D patients through multi-target regulation of the brain-gut axis,demonstrating clear clinical advantages.Future research should focus on elucidating the synergistic mechanisms of acupuncture and medication and refining syndrome differentiation models to enhance the scientific rigor and personalization of treatment protocols.关键词
