A study on the linguistic landscapes of historical and cultural districts in cities along the Jiangsu section of the Grand Canal

Abstract
Linguistic landscape serves as a direct manifestation of the integration of space and narrative in historical and cultural districts.Guided by spatial narrative theory,this study investigates the linguistic landscapes of historical and cultural districts in cities along the Jiangsu section of the Grand Canal(Qingguo Alley in Changzhou,Xijin Ferry in Zhenjiang,and Xiaolou Lane in Wuxi).It analyzes the symbolic presentation of linguistic landscapes and their historical narrative mechanisms from two dimensions:spatial symbols(static)and narrative threads(dynamic).The findings reveal that these districts' linguistic landscapes exhibit narrative features of"diverse symbol collaboration"and"historical time accumulation".There are issues about the linguistic landscapes such as fragmented information and disjointed narrative threads.Therefore,in the planning of historical and cultural districts,the narrative design of linguistic landscapes across temporal and spatial dimensions should holistically be considered.关键词
