Effects of cutting intensity on the growth characteristics of Cenchrus pauciflorus in Horqin Sandy Land

Abstract
[Objective]To determinethe most effectivecutting intensity for controlling the invasive species Cen-chrus pauciflorus in the Horqin sandy land,thereby prooviding a scientific basis for its management.[Methods]A controlled experiment was conducted with four treatments:no mowing control(CK),light mowing(LM;stubble height of 10 cm),moderate mowing(MM;stubble height of 5 cm),and heavy mowing(HC;stubble height of 2 cm).The effects of these treatments on the growth characteristics of Cenchrus pauciflorus were assessed.[Result]1)All mowing treatments significantly inhibited the plant height growth and the regeneration rate of Cenchrus pauciflorus compared to the control,with the inhibitory effect following the order:HM>MM>LM.2)Both moderate and severe mowingsignificantly suppressed multiple growth parameters,includingplant height,leaf number,root number,primary and secondary branch numbers,tillering,and dry matter mass of stems and leaves,thereby reducing the total aboveg-round and subsurface biomass accumulation.Heavy mowing had the most pronounced effect,reducing these indices by 68.96%,11.99%,13.97%,34.59%,70.03%,2.65%,48.76%,68.82%,30.35%and 65.04%,respectively,compared to the control(CK).3)In contrast,light mowing(LM)promotedleaf number,the maximum root length,root number,and plant tillering.4)Both light and heavy mowingsignificantly inhibited the reproductive capacityof Cenchrus pauciflorus by effectively reducing the number of propagativebranches.[Conclusion]Moderate and severe cutting with a stubble height of 5cm or less,is an effective method for controlling Cenchrus pauciflorus.关键词
