深海采矿中层羽流被动输运阶段扩散及沉降特征数值模拟
Numerical simulation of diffusion and settlement characteristics during the passive transport phase of midwater plumes in deep-sea mining

Abstract
To investigate the flow and deposition characteristics of plumes generated by the discharge of deep-sea min-ing tailings into intermediate water,a large-scale hydrodynamic model was developed and validated using the HYCOM circulation model and relevant boundary conditions.The finite element method was applied to simulate the transport and diffusion processes of the plume,enabling the assessment of the effects of various discharge configurations and pa-rameters on plume behavior in intermediate waters.Numerical simulations revealed that,under identical background currents,a discharge configuration nearly perpendicular to the flow direction,smaller median particle sizes,and higher discharge positions resulted in more extensive and uniform sediment deposition.Additionally,smaller particle sizes and higher discharge positions significantly prolonged sediment suspension times and increased plume volume.Key metrics for evaluating the environmental impact of plumes—such as deposition area,suspended plume volume,and suspension duration—offer valuable insights for optimizing deep-sea mining tailings discharge strategies.关键词
