Occurrence characteristics of per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances(PFASs)in municipal wastewater treatment plants and their receiving waters in a northern city
摘要
Abstract
To explore the pollution level characteristics of per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances(PFASs)in municipal wastewater treatment plants(WWTPs)and their receiving water bodies, six WWTPs in a certain city in the north were selected as the research objects. The total PFASs mass concentrations ranged as follows:31.51~55.11 ng·L-1 in influent,29.76~57.75 ng·L-1 in secondary effluent,27.37~51.60 ng·L-1 in final effluent,23.84~65.75 ng·L-1 in receiving waters, and the mass fraction of sludge ranged from 8.75~22.31 ng·g-1.Short-chain PFASs and hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid(GenX)dominated the PFAS profiles in both wastewater and receiving waters.Limited removal efficiency was demonstrated in WWTPs,where effluent mass concentrations occasionally exceeded influent levels influent levels, likely due to the transformation of PFASs precursors during treatment processes.Spearman correlation analysis identified significant contributions of GenX,perfluoroundecanoic acid(PFUnDA),perfluorononanoic acid(PFNA),and perfluorodecanoic acid(PFDA)in receiving waters to WWTPs discharge.Ecological and health risk assessments indicated that current PFASs mass concentrations posed negligible risks to ecosystems and minimal health impacts on adults. However, cumulative exposure risks for vulnerable populations, particularly women and children, warrant attention. These findings highlight the need for enhanced monitoring of PFASs precursor transformations in WWTPs and targeted management of short-chain alternatives in industrial regions.关键词
