Abstract

To clarify the changes of biochar characteristics and its Cd2+adsorption mechanisms under two common aging processes(dry-wet alternating and oxidative aging),pristine biochar(BC),dry-wet alternating aging biochar(DWBC)and oxidative aging biochar(OBC)from Pennisetum giganteum straw were prepared in this study.The Cd2+adsorption mechanisms by biochars were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively through batch experiments,DFT calculations and biochar characterization.It showed that the Cd2+adsorption by DWBC and OBC decreased to 50.87%and 53.89%compared with that of BC,and the aging process had reduced the Cd2+adsorption capacity of biochars.The mineral precipitation(Qpre)of DWBC and OBC decreased by 12.49%and 26.95%,respectively,and the mineral loss from biochars was the main reason for the Cd2+adsorption decrease.However,mineral precipitation was still the main mechanism for the adsorption of Cd2+by DWBC.In contrast,the ion exchange(Q exc)was the dominant Cd2+adsorption mechanism on OBC and its contribution was 6.41%and 9.44%higher than that of BC and DWBC,respectively.In addition,the ether group and phenolic hydroxyl group were the key functional groups that affected the Cd2+adsorption on biochars.This study revealed the influence of dry-wet alternation and oxidative aging on the Cd2+adsorption on biochars,which had provided theoretical support for the application of biochars in Cd2+pollution wastewater treatment.
