Abstract

Sthenoteuthis oualaniensis,a cephalopod species possessing substantial economic significance,has been subjected to a comprehensive study aimed at elucidating the spatio-temporal distribution patterns of its fishing grounds in the Northwest Indian Ocean,as well as exploring the correlation between its catch per unit effort(CPUE)and various environmental factors.Utilizing the light-falling net catch data of S.oualaniensis collected in the Northwest Indian Ocean from September of 2021 to May of the subsequent year,in conjunction with extensive marine environmental data,this study employed fishery ground centroid analysis and generalized additive models(GAM)to conduct a thorough analysis.The results reveal intriguing dynamics in the fishing grounds of S.oualaniensis.On an annual basis,the fishing grounds exhibit a notable shift from northwest to southeast.Monthly variations further show that the fishing grounds are positioned at their northernmost extent from September to November,subsequently shifting to their westernmost location between December and February of the following year,and ultimately moving to their southernmost point from March to May of the same year.This seasonal movement follows a counterclockwise trajectory over time.In terms of environmental factors,the eastward sea current velocity emerges as the most pivotal determinant influencing the CPUE of S.oualaniensis.Following closely are temperature at the 600m water layer,northward wind speed,temperature at the 500m water layer,latitude,temperature at the 50m water layer,chlorophyll-a concentration,sea surface height,salinity at the 150m water layer and temperature at the 300m water layer.Additionally,the research underscores a recent shift in the fishing grounds of S.oualaniensis within the Northwest Indian Ocean.Notably,these grounds have transitioned from moving towards higher latitudes to shifting towards lower latitudes,extending as far south as 16°30'N.In terms of longitude,they have also moved towards higher longitudes,reaching as far east as 65°00'E.The findings offer valuable insights and can serve as a foundation for the sustainable utilization of S.oualaniensis in the Northwest Indian Ocean.
