Abstract
Architectural exhibitions, due to the"absence"of actual buildings, have become a unique medium for spatial critique, with narratives constructed through substitutes such as models and drawings. This paper systematically reviews the historical genealogy and typological characteristics of architectural exhibitions, revealing dual development trajectories:the Western context, where declarative exhibitions drive shifts in architectural discourse;and the Chinese context, which has moved from local experimentation in the 1990s toward global dialogue.Using the 2025 West Bund Museum exhibition"Constructing Shanghai:Architecture,City, and Culture Since 1949"as a case study, this paper analyzes how its"chronological slices+thematic juxtaposition"narrative reflects the changes in spatial production in Shanghai. This paper also critically identifies three main shortcomings in the exhibition:imbalance between landmark and everyday spaces, the masking of the true experience of spatial users, and lack of critique on sustainable practices. The study demonstrates that architectural exhibitions have value beyond display, serving as a critical tool to reshape spatial discourse and contribute to discussions and practices in urban development.关键词
