Comparison of stem fullness in different ecological regions,seasons,and varieties of cut chrysanthemum and its effect on vase quality

Abstract
[Objectives]Based on the potential effects of stem quality on the postharvest quality of cut flowers,the stem fullness of cut chrysanthemum varieties was evaluated,and the factors affecting stem hollowness and their effects on the postharvest quality were preliminarily explored,providing a scientific basis for quality optimization of cut chrysanthemums.[Methods]The stem fullness of different varieties of cut chrysanthemum produced in different ecological regions and seasons was investigated,and the influence of temperature conditions on stem fullness,together with the impact of stem fullness on vase quality,was analyzed.[Results]A comprehensive assessment of stem fullness in 144 samples of cut chrysanthemum indicated among the varieties,19.44%showed flawed fullness in both longitudinal and transverse directions,37.50%showed moderate fullness,and 27.08%showed good stem fullness.In addition,10.42%of the varieties showed better transverse stem fullness than longitudinal stem fullness,while only 5.56%showed better longitudinal stem fullness than transverse stem fullness.There were significant seasonal differences in stem fullness of cut chrysanthemum produced in the Kaiyuan region in Yunnan Province,with the best stem fullness in autumn,followed by in winter,and the worst in summer.In the comparison among 26 varieties of cut chrysanthemum that were blooming in summer in Nanjing and Kaiyuan,the stem fullness of 10 varieties such as'Nannongdanxin'was better in Nanjing than in Kaiyuan.The stem fullness of 5 varieties such as'Nannongwanhuatong'was slightly better in Nanjing than in Kaiyuan.The stem fullness of 11 varieties such as'Nannongbingjie'was better in Kaiyuan than in Nanjing.In addition,the stem fullness of 36 self-cultivated varieties such as'Nannonghongrui''Qinhuaiqingcha'was generally better than 57 introduced varieties such as'Fubai''Hancheng'.At the temperature of 19.96-29.18℃in the growing stage,the stem fullness of cut chrysanthemum was relatively better,and the persistent high temperature and extreme temperature change during stem formation could aggravate the hollowing of the stem.Moreover,stem hollowing had a negative effect on vase quality,and the longitudinal fullness of stems had a more significant effect than the transverse fullness.And postharvest cold storage could not eliminate the occurrence of stem hollowing.[Conclusions]Stem hollowing was not conductive to cut chrysanthemum vase quality,and a stable and suitable temperature during stem formation was beneficial for improving stem fullness.关键词
