Abstract

The threshold values of heavy metals in agricultural soil are key criteria for formulating policies on agricultural development,environmental protection,and soil remediation.As China's only tropical island province,Hainan's heavy metal contamination status of soil resources has profound impacts on ecological balance,agricultural product safety,and sustainable agricultural development.This paper systematically analyzes the background values and pollution assessment of soil heavy metals(Cd,Pb,As,Ni,Cu,Zn,Cr,Hg)in Hainan soils since the"Seventh Five-year Plan"period identifies the main ranges of the background values of each heavy metal,and finds significant discrepancies among different studies.The background values of Cd,As,and Hg varied most considerable,with differences up to 11-15 times;those of Ni,Cu,and Cr differed by approximately 5 times;while variations for Pb and Zn were relatively small.Moreover,due to differences in soil types,results also diverged even under the same standards.The highest background values of Cd and Hg are close to the"Soil Environmental Quality Risk Control Standard for Soil Contamination of Agricultural Land"(GB 15618-2018),and should therefore be used cautiously as reference background values.These findings provide a scientific basis for soil pollution control and environmental remediation in tropical regions of China,and will help realize the safety of agricultural products and promote the development of characteristic agriculture.
