Practice and development direction of geothermal energy exploitation and utilization in Shanghai

Abstract
Against the backdrop of China's"dual carbon"goals,geothermal energy has emerged as an important pathway to optimize urban energy structures and advance low-carbon transition,owing to its cleanliness,renewability,and local availability.Although Shanghai lacks high-temperature geothermal anomalies,it is endowed with abundant shallow geothermal resources and certain medium-deep geothermal potential.This study reviews the distribution characteristics and types of geothermal resources in Shanghai,analyzes their current utilization in building cooling and heating,and evaluates their contributions to energy conservation and emission reduction.It further summarizes innovative development models,including the integrated application of shallow and medium-deep geothermal technologies,explorations of new business and management approaches,and the synergistic integration of geothermal with other clean energy sources.In light of existing challenges—such as insufficient resource exploration,technical limitations,financing difficulties,and an incomplete regulatory framework—this paper proposes policy recommendations on improving resource planning,strengthening research investment,promoting market-oriented mechanisms,and enhancing legal and technical standards.The findings suggest that geothermal energy has broad development prospects in Shanghai's energy transition and,with coordinated efforts in exploration,technological innovation,and policy support,is expected to become an essential pillar of the city's green and low-carbon development.关键词
