The effects of different assemblages of submerged macrophytes on water quality purification and plant functional traits

Abstract
To explore the effects of different combinations of submerged aquatic plants on water purification effi-ciency and plant functional traits,three submerged macrophytes that were historically abundant in Chen Lake,namely Potamogeton malaianus,Myriophyllum spicatum,and Hydrilla verticillata were selected,and seven spe-cies combinations were configured.Using the surface sediment of Chen Lake after ecological restoration project'turning fishpond to lake'as the substrate,a simulated aquatic ecosystem was established to determine the effects of different submerged macrophytes combinations on the physical and chemical properties of the experimental sys-tem,as well as the differences in plant functional traits at the end of the experiment.The results showed that the three submerged macrophytes had certain tolerance to the sediment of Chen Lake and grew well under the experi-mental conditions.All macrophytes treatments significantly reduced the concentrations of total nitrogen(TN)and ammonia nitrogen(NH3-N)in the system.Moreover,the three plant combination showed the best effect,with removal rates achieving 46.02%and 46.25%,respectively.Only planting single M.spicatum had a significant removal effect on TP in the middle and late stages,with a removal rate of 73.44%.None of the groups could sig-nificantly reduce the permanganate index(CODMn).Species combinations significantly affected the maximum stem height of P.malaianus and M.spicatum,the maximum root length of all three macrophytes,the number of shoots of P.malaianus and H.verticillata,and the biomass of M.spicatum and H.verticillata.The relative crow-ding coefficient(RCC)indicated that P.malaianus has a stronger competitive ability in mixed planting at P.malaianus+H.verticillata,P.malaianus+M.spicatum+H.verticillata.The competitive advantage of M.spi-catum is the highest in mixed planting at M.spicatum+H.verticillate,P.malaianus+M.spicatum+H.verticil-lata,while H.verticillata has the weakest competitive advantage among all the combinations.The results showed that three species of submerged aquatic plants had strong adaptability and could grow in the high-nutrient sediment of Chen Lake after the conversion from fishing to lake restoration.关键词
