Abstract

Soil moisture is a key factor linking hydrological and ecological processes,and an important indicator for evaluating the effectiveness of soil and water conservation measures.This paper systematically reviews studies on soil water infiltration characteristics and moisture responses,as well as the dynamics of soil water under different land use types.The literature covers typical regions such as the Northeast Black Soil Region,the Loess Plateau,red soil hilly areas,dry hot valleys,and purple soil hilly areas,and land-use types including sloping cropland,economic-forest slopes,forest grass land,and rainfed farmland.We focus on the effects of different soil and water conservation mea-sures—slope engineering,vegetation measures,tillage and mulching practices,water-retaining agents,and deep tillage—on soil water content,infiltration characteristics,and water use efficiency.Overall,the results show that engi-neering measures such as slope terracing,level benches,fish-scale pits,and level trenches significantly increase soil water content in the 0-100 cm layer and reduce slope runoff and erosion.Mixed forest grass configurations and more complex vegetation structures generally enhance saturated water-holding capacity and non-capillary porosity,thereby strengthening the"slope reservoir"effect.Conservation tillage,straw mulching,and plastic film mulching ef-fectively increase pre-sowing and summer-fallow soil water storage and improve water use efficiency in rainfed crop-ping systems.Application of water-retaining agents and deep vertical rotary tillage alters soil structure,pore distribu-tion,and water nutrient retention,reshaping infiltration processes and water-holding performance from both micro-scopic and profile scales.Existing studies still suffer from limitations in spatial scale,long-term evolution,deep soil moisture monitoring,and multi-objective comprehensive evaluation.Future work should strengthen multi-scale observa-tions and process-based model coupling,and optimize combinations of soil and water conservation measures under the principles of"lightweight,efficient,and ecologically friendly"practices,so as to support agricultural and forestry soil and water conservation and water resource utilization in different regions.
