Symbolic Characteristics of the Concept of"Three Yin and Three Yang"in Huangdi Neijing(Inner Canon of the Yellow Emperor)

Abstract
The thinking pattern of"Three Yin and Three Yang"in Huangdi Neijing(The Yellow Emperor's Inner Can-on)demonstrates the characteristic of a symbolic notation system.When constructing its knowledge system of life sciences,the scripture employs"Three Yang"(Shao Yang,Yang Ming,Tai Yang)and"Three Yin"(Jue Yin,Shao Yin,Tai Yin)as symbols for multiple phenomena:the twelve meridians corresponding to the six periods of the twelve months in a year,the twelve primary meridians of the human body,the five zang-organs and six fu-organs,different types of human characteristics,the six steps of primary qi and secondary qi in the theory of qi cycles,as well as the concepts of root,branch,and intermediate qi.Therefore,when discussing the symbols of"Three Yin and Three Yang,"one must first iden-tify the specific things denoted by the symbols and must not conflate them.关键词
