Habitat Adaptation and Mobility:A Study of the Repeated Migrations of Pastoralists from Northern Xizang in Bayanbulak

Abstract
Repeated migration is a prevalent phenomenon in immigrant societies,occurring not only among the ini-tial immigrant groups but also frequently among the second-generation immigrants.Differences in"homeland identity"be-tween immigrant generations to a certain extent determine the occurrence of such repeated migration.Through an investi-gation into the repeated migration process of Northern herders between northern Xizang and the Bayanbulak Grassland in Xinjiang from the mid-to-late 1950s to the late 1980s,this study finds that they exhibited the typical characteristics of ini-tial migration,return migration,and re-migration among immigrant populations.This research sorts out the process,causes,and individual lived experiences of the repeated migration of Northern herders in Bayanbulak.It analyzes the con-straints imposed on their mobility by"habitat"and"primitive habitat",formed by the combined effects of natural ecology and social-cultural environment,during population migration.The study argues that"habitat adaptation"under specific temporal and spatial contexts is the decisive strategic choice for migrant populations.It not only determines the error-prone search for destinations during the migration process but also shapes the inter-generational differences in mobility among migrant groups,serving as the decisive force behind initial migration,return migration,and re-migration.关键词
