Abstract

To address the unclear corrosion behavior of X80 pipeline steel under the combined influence of oxygen and temperature during liquid ammonia transportation,electrochemical testing methods such as open circuit potential(OCP)and potentiodynamic polarization,combined with microscopic characterization techniques including scanning electron microscopy(SEM),energy dispersive spectroscopy(EDS),and X-ray diffraction(XRD),were systematically employed to investigate the electrochemical corrosion behavior of X80 pipeline steel in ammonia environments under varying oxygen concentrations and temperatures.The results show that as oxygen concentration increases,the corrosion potential of X80 pipeline steel shifts positively,and the corrosion current density decreases,indicating a trend of corrosion inhibition;however,rising temperature significantly accelerates the corrosion process,with the corrosion potential shifting negatively and the corrosion current density increasing.After adding 8 mg/kg of oxygen,a relatively uniform and dense thin-layered corrosion product forms,providing some passivation effect.However,at higher temperatures,the number of cracks and micro-fractures within the thin layer increases significantly,preventing the protective layer from effectively isolating the corrosive medium.Ammonia can form soluble complexes with the steel substrate,and the iron ions in the complexes combine with hydroxyl groups generated by the cathodic oxygen reduction reaction,ultimately forming Fe(OH)3 and Fe2O3 products.The findings deepen the understanding of the localized electrochemical corrosion behavior of pipeline materials during liquid ammonia transportation and provide theoretical support for material selection and protection in liquid ammonia pipelines.
