Abstract

[Objective]To understand the relationship between crown characteristics and growth characters of Erythrophleum fordii plantations at young stage,analyze the impact patterns of different pruning intensities on crown characteristics and growth characters,and clarify the intensity of pruning management measures,thereby providing a basis for the establishment of innovative cultivation techniques.[Method]The pruning experiment was carried out in 4-year-old pure forests of E.fordii.Different pruning intensity comparison experiments were set up.A survey was conducted 4 years after pruning.The analytic hierarchy process(AHP)was used for comprehensive evaluation of growth characters of E.fordii.The path analysis method was employed to analyze the relationship between crown characteristics and growth characters.Additionally,variance analysis and multiple comparison methods were utilized to clarify the effects of different pruning intensities on crown characteristics,growth characters,and comprehensive evaluation value of E.fordii.[Result]Crown height(CH)and Under-branch height(UBH)had extremely significant direct positive effects on DBH,tree height,volume,and comprehensive evaluation value(CEV),and extremely significant direct negative effects on crown diameter ratio(CDR)and breast height form factor(BHFF).Crown width(CW)had extremely significant direct positive effects on DBH,volume,CDR,and CEV,and extremely significant direct negative effects on height-diameter ratio(HDR)and breast height form factor(BHFF).The influence and importance of crown characteristics on growth characters factors of E.fordii were not the same.The relative importance to CEV was UBH>CH>CW>Dead branch height(HDB)>Number of lateral branches(NLB)>Number of dead branches(NDB).Different pruning treatments had no significant effect on stem straightness(SS)and BHFF.When pruning 1/3(removing branches below 1/3 of the tree height),DBH mean annual increment(DMAI),UBH,HDB,and CEV were significantly greater than the control(CK,no pruning),and CH was significantly lower than CK.When pruning 1/2(removing branches below 1/2 of the tree height),DMAI,UBH,NDB,HDB,and CEV were significantly greater than CK,and CW,CH,and CDR were significantly lower than CK.When pruning 2/3(removing branches below 2/3 of the tree height),UBH and HDB were significantly greater than CK,and Height mean annual increment(HMAI),CH,NDB,and HDR were significantly lower than CK.The CEV of different pruning intensities was pruning 1/3>pruning 1/2>pruning 2/3>CK.[Conclusion]Crown characteristics had significant direct effects on growth characters of E.fordii plantation at young stage,among which the UBH,CH,and CW had a greater impact.To cultivate E.fordii with large diameter,it was necessary to have a higher height UBH and CH,followed by a wide and large CW.The response of crown characteristics and growth characters to pruning intensity was obvious.Although pruning reduced the CW and CH,it significantly increased the UBH.Pruning 1/3 showed a better CEV and was suitable for the cultivation of E.fordii large-diameter timber plantations.
