The relationship between early stand structure characteristics and stability of Eucalyptus plantations

Abstract
[Objective]This study aims to explore the relationship between stand structure and stability in young Eucalyptus plantations,identify the main factors affecting stand stability,and provide a theoretical basis for the management.[Method]Twelve 20 m×20 m sample plots were established in Luoding City,Guangdong Province,for stand characteristic surveys and stability analysis.Descriptive statistics,Pearson correlation analysis,and structural equation modeling(SEM)were applied to analyze the relationships between nine stand structure indicators:aggregation index,DBH Kurtosis,DBH skewness,DBH Gini coefficient,tree height Kurtosis,tree height skewness,tree height Gini coefficient,uniform angle index,and size ratio,and eight stand stability indicators:height-to-DBH ratio,crown-to-height ratio,crown fullness,crown projection ratio,average relative diameter,stand regeneration capacity,intraspecific competition index,and species diversity.[Result]1)In terms of stand structure,the aggregation index ranged from 1.34 to 1.82,indicating a tendency toward regular spatial distribution of trees;tree height skewness was greater than 0,suggesting a higher proportion of small-diameter in the stand;tree height kurtosis was greater than 0,indicating a concentrated central distribution of DBH;the uniform angle index ranged from 0.42 to 0.75,reflecting a high proportion of randomly and aggregately distributed stand units;the size ratio was concentrated around 0.50,indicating a predominance of intermediately sized trees;2)Regarding stand stability,the intraspecific competition index ranged from 1.63 to 2.59,indicating high competition intensity within the population;the species diversity index ranged from 0.62 to 1.29,suggesting a low level of species diversity;the average relative diameter was close to 1,indicating that the DBH of most trees was close to the stand average;3)Significant negative correlations were observed between size ratio and average relative diameter,aggregation index and intraspecific competition index,DBH Gini coefficient and height-to-DBH ratio,crown-to-height ratio,crown projection ratio,and stand regeneration capacity,as well as between tree height kurtosis and average relative diameter(P<0.05).Significant positive correlations were found between DBH skewness and average relative diameter,and between tree height skewness and intraspecific competition index(P<0.05);4)Structural equation modeling results indicated that diameter structure plays a critical role in stand stability.[Conclusion]The results demonstrated that the stand structure of young eucalyptus plantations significantly influences stand stability.Specifically,stands with more uniform tree sizes,even distribution,and smaller differentiation in DBH and height exhibit stronger resistance to external disturbances and greater recovery capacity.关键词
