Comparative study on starvation tolerance of Artemia larvae from different populations

Abstract
In aquatic animals,starvation is a critical factor inducing the mortality of larvae/juveniles,and the maternal production of large eggs represents a survival strategy adopted by aquatic animals to enhance larval survival and adapt to food scarcity.Considering the highly diverse environmental conditions,including climate,salinity,and chemical composition,in Artemia habitats,we hypothesized that distinct inter-population differences may exist in larval starvation tolerance,which may be correlated with egg size.To test this hypothesis,the starvation tolerance of larvae from 32 Artemia populations was experimentally compared,and the relationship between the starvation tolerance of Artemia larvae and the size,as well as the energy content,of cysts(resting eggs),was analyzed.For all populations,the survival rate(corrected based on control)of Artemia larvae under starvation stress can be described by the Boltzmann equation y=A2+(A1-A2)/[1+e(x-x0)/dx],where x is the time of starvation,y is the survival rate of Artemia larvae,dx is the slope of the curve,A1 and A2 are the y-values near the starting and ending x values,and x0 represents the x-coordinate corresponding to the center point of the curve.The T80(days of 80%survival),T50(days of 50%survival)and T20(days of 20%survival)of the 32 Artemia populations varied from 0.79 to 4.07 days,1.62 to 4.73 days,and 2.06 to 5.88 days,with the maximum values being 5.2,2.9,and 2.9 times the minimum values,respectively,indicating considerable inter-population differences in the starvation tolerance of Artemia larvae.Such inter-population differences were also evident among intra-species populations,with the maximum values being 2.1,1.5,2.4,and 2.5 times the minimum values in Artemia sinica,Artemia tibetiana,Artemia franciscana,and parthenogenetic Artemia,respectively.The average T50 ranked as A.tibetiana(3.71 days)>parthenogenetic Artemia(3.18 days)>A.sinica(2.75 days)>A.franciscana(2.59 days),which is consistent with the order of the average cyst diameter of each species.T80 and T50 exhibited moderately positive correlations with the diameter of cysts(0.5<r<0.8;P<0.001),whereas T20 exhibited weakly positive correlations with the diameter of cysts(0.3<r<0.5;P<0.05).T50 and T20 correlated positively with the energy content per cyst(0.3<r<0.5;P<0.05),whereas the correlation between T80 and energy was not significant(r=0.45;P=0.06).The cyst diameter,dry weight,and energy content of A.tibetiana correlated highly with the T80,T50,and T20 of their larvae(r>0.8;P<0.05),except for the non-significant correlations between T80 and cyst weight(r=0.825;P=0.05)and between T80 and cyst energy(r=0.856;P=0.06).For parthenogenetic Artemia,T80 correlated positively with cyst diameter(r=0.62;P=0.04),whereas T50 and T20 correlated significantly with cyst energy(r>0.9;P<0.05).These results suggest that the survival time of early-stage larvae under starvation may be largely impacted by the nutritional reserves of cysts,with larvae hatched from larger or higher-energy cysts being relatively more tolerant to starvation.The large size and high energy content features shared by cysts in Artemia populations from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau are thus beneficial to the survival of larvae under low food production conditions induced by low temperatures on this plateau.关键词
