Abstract

In this study,we designed a replicated mesocosm experiment using three ecologically significant submerged macrophyte species,i.e.,Vallisneria natans,Hydrilla verticillata,and Ceratophyllum demersum,to evaluate the effects of grazing by grass carp(Ctenopharyngodon idella)and crucian carp(Carassius auratus)on the growth of these submerged macrophytes and their aquatic habitat.The experiment comprised nine treatment groups in a 3×3 factorial design:control-V.natans group,control-H.verticillata group,and control-C.demersum group;C.idella-V.natans group,C.idella-H.verticillata group,and C.idella-C.demersum group;and C.auratus-V.natans group,C.auratus-H.verticillata group,and C.auratus-C.demersum group.The entire experiment lasted for 90 days.The number and growth of submerged plants in the different experimental groups were monitored every 15 days.Moreover,the changes in the physical and chemical indices of water,as well as the composition,dominance,and biomass of plankton species,were monitored.The results revealed the grazing of C.idella exerted an extremely significant inhibitory effect on the biomass of both seedlings and mature plants of V.natans,H.verticillata,and C.demersum.It also significantly reduced the survival number and plant height of these three submerged plants.In contrast,the grazing of C.auratus on V.natans and H.verticillata caused a significant inhibition on their growth.However,the height and biomass of C.demersum exhibited an increase in the late stage of the experiment.The transparency of water in the groups subjected to grazing by grass carp and crucian carp decreased significantly compared with that in the control group,whereas the content of solid suspended matter,total nitrogen content,total phosphorus content,and chemical oxygen demand increased significantly.Zooplankton grazing on submerged plants exhibited increased biomass and altered composition of dominant populations.Correlation analysis revealed that the survival rates of submerged plants in the groups subjected to grazing by grass carp and crucian carp exhibited a significant positive correlation with water transparency but a negative correlation with chemical oxygen demand.Our results provide data support for the restoration of submerged plants in shallow lakes.
