Correlation analysis of fundus tessellation density and refractive parameters in preschool children

Abstract
Objective To investigate the age-related changes in fundus tessellated density(FTD)in preschool children aged 3~5 years and analyze its correlation with spherical equivalent(SE),axial length(AL),and corneal curvature radius(CR).Methods This retrospective study included 183 children aged 3~5 years from a kindergarten in Beijing between April 2023 and April 2025.Data collected included SE,AL,corneal curvature(K),and color fundus photographs.Artificial intelligence(AI)algorithms were used to quantitatively assess the choroidal exposure area and FTD.Participants were divided cross-sectionally into three age groups:3-year-old(n=45),4-year-old(n=55),and 5-year-old(n=83).The incidence of tessellated fundus was compared among the groups,and correlations between FTD and SE,AL,and height were analyzed.Dynamic developmental curves were plotted.Longitudinal follow-up was performed to track dynamic changes in ocular parameters during eye development.Results The overall incidence of tessellated fundus in normal children aged 3~5 years was 79.78%.Cross-sectional analysis showed that AL and AL/CR increased significantly with age,while no statistically significant differences were observed in FTD,SE,or CR among age groups(P<0.05).FTD was significantly positively correlated with AL and CR(P<0.05)but not with SE or height(P>0.05).Longitudinal analysis revealed that for every 1 cm increase in height,SE decreased by 0.029 D(P=0.043)and AL increased by 0.033 mm(P=0.002).For every 1 mm increase in AL,SE decreased by 0.301 D(P=0.007).Conclusion Fundus tessellated density may serve as a sensitive biomarker for ocular wall extensibility in children,and its developmental trajectory provides a new indicator for early warning of myopia.关键词
