Effects of different tissues of maize on the growth,development and protogyny of Spodoptera frugiperda

Abstract
[Objective]Spodoptera frugiperda is a major migratory pest of maize in China,and the protogyny was detected in its development.This study aims to clarify the effects of different maize tissues on the develop-ment and protogyny of S.frugiperda,so as to provide a theoretical basis for its accurate monitoring and early de-tection.[Method]We compared the survival rate,developmental period,emergence rhythm and fecundity of S.frugiperda fed on different tissues of maize,including heart leaves and corresponding functional leaves at the seedling stage,unexpanded maize tassel at tasseling stage and their corresponding functional leaves,ears at the initial silking stage through indoor tests.[Result]The highest larval survival rates of S.frugiperda were observed when fed on heart leaves at the seedling stage and ears at the initial silking stage,reaching at 87.08%and 88.77%,respectively.These groups also demonstrated significantly superior eclosion rates and fecundity,which were 93.47%,93.08%and 944.20,949.00,respectively.Conversely,larvae fed on functional leaves during the tasseling stage exhibited the lowest survival rate,pupation rate,and egg production,which were 62.37%,91.10%and 767.00,respectively.After feeding on the five types of maize tissues,S.frugiperda exhibited protogyny,which means the pre-emergence period of female adults was shorter than that of males.However,in the population fed with functional leaves in the tasseling stage of maize,the difference in pre-emergence periods between female and male was significantly reduced compared to those fed on other tissues.Additionally,no significant difference was detected in pupal weight between female and male in this group.Populations fed on other maize tissues showed greater sexual dimorphism in emergence time and pupal weight.[Conclusion]This study systematically reveals for the first time the impact of feeding on different maize tissues on the protogyny phenomenon in S.frugiperda.Given the low larval survival rate observed when fed on functional leaves at the tasseling stage,we proposed that reduced host plant suitability is one of the key factors contributing to the weakened protogyny in S.frugiperda.These findings provide new insights into the synchronization of male and female development in S.frugiperda.关键词
