The Interpersonal Dimension and Imagistic Expression of the Nobleman's Joy in Book of Songs
摘要
Abstract
In China's earliest anthology of lyrical poetry,the"Three Hundred Poems"(Book of Songs),numerous verses depict joyous scenes of aristocratic gentry engaging in court assemblies,hunting,weddings,singing,dancing,feasting,and other celebratory activities.These poems encapsulate ethical ideals such as enduring family prosperity,harmonious marital relationships,and amiable ruler-subject dynamics,thereby imbuing the early Zhou people's sense of joy with distinct interpersonal attributes,as well as features of externality,collectivity,and morality.By associating joyful emotions with various natural objects and social phenomena,and employing artistic techniques such as evocative imagery,metaphor,and symbolism,the poems subtly and implicitly unite the natural instincts of life with the social dimensions of ethics and morality.This fusion integrates the instinctive joy of the Zhou gentry with values such as reverence for ritual and virtue,personal cultivation,familial and national responsibilities,the continuation of life,and affectionate care,highlighting the ethnic characteristic where emotion and rationality,human relations and politics,nature and society are distinct yet inseparable.Through close textual analysis,this paper examines the"joy without excess"—the moderate delight and rational illumination-in Book of Songs from three perspectives:familial harmony,marital unity,and ruler-subject virtue.It further explores the cultural ideals of the flourishing period of Zhou dynasty ritual and musical civilization,as well as the artistic charm of these ancient poems.关键词
