Research on SPM umbilical failure and design optimization

Abstract
The CALM single-point mooring system is a widely used oil terminal in international operations.The umbilical cable,as the core component for power and signal transmission between the floating buoy and the subsea manifold base,directly impacts system safety.This paper investigates signal transmission failures in the umbilical cable of the Bangladesh single-point mooring project,which occurred repeatedly within a short period.Through on-site disassembly inspection,multi-project sea condition comparison,and modeling analysis,the causes of the failures were identified and optimized designs were proposed.The study reveals that the primary causes were the harsh sea conditions in the Bay of Bengal-characterized by large tidal ranges and high currents-combined with the original design's inadequacies,leading to fatigue damage from repeated cable swinging and inter-core friction heating,resulting in melting and deformation.Based on this,targeted optimizations were implemented,including the addition of armored steel wire protection layers,adjustments to umbilical cable length and fixed-point quantity,improvements in clamp structure and core twisting methods.The optimized umbilical cable was successfully applied to the project,demonstratingstable and reliable operation.These findings provide practical reference for fault diagnosis and design optimization of single-point mooring umbilical cables under severe sea conditions,effectively reducing safety risks and economic losses in similar projects.关键词
