The Traces of Chongniu Doublets in Zheng-Zhi and You Rimes

Abstract
The chongniu(double initials)oppositions vary among rime dictionaries of the Qieyun(Cut Rhymes)system;some oppositions existing in early texts merged in the later Guangyun(Broad Rhymes).This paper discusses the Zhi(Zhi Rime)and You(You Rime)which exhibit chongniu oppositions in the Qieyun,and incidentally addresses other rimes of corresponding tones.According to the Guangyun,these two rimes seem to belong to Type C,with the only trace of their chongniu status being that bilabial initials did not shift to labiodentals.Based on an analysis of the differences between texts of the Qieyun system,this study explores the original state of the chongniu oppositions in the Zhi and You rimes and the process of their merger.The first part focuses on the Zheng-Zhi rimes,clarifying that some characters under the Jian,Qun,and Yi initials in the open-mouth Zhi Rime form an independent category,which can be linked to Type B,and notes that the same situation exists in the Zheng Rime(level tone)corresponding to the Zhi Rime.The second part explains the reasons for the significant discrepancies in the classification of You-related rimes between the Guangyun and other texts of the Qieyun system.关键词
