Duan Yucai's Academic Networks and the Jiangnan Intellectual Circles:A Study

Abstract
Duan Yucai,a scholar of the Qianlong-Jiaqing period in the Qing Dynasty,had academic exchanges spanning five major regions:the capital(Beijing),Guizhou,Sichuan,Hubei,and Jiangnan,forming a cross-regional academic exchange network.In his early years,he was enlightened by Yin Huiyi and Dai Zhen;in his middle age,he had in-depth interactions with textual research scholars such as Qian Daxin and Shao Jinhan in Beijing;after settling in Suzhou in his later years,he established extensive connections with Jiangnan scholars such as Lu Wenchao,Ruan Yuan,and Huang Pilie,promoting academic exchanges through letters,meetings,preface writing,and collation and engraving of ancient books.Duan Yucai's academic practice highlights his multiple cultural identities:he not only inherited the textual research tradition of the Anhui School but also integrated into the Jiangnan academic circle,participating in academy lectures,military governor's office collaboration,and ancient book collation.He became a model of Qian-Jia scholarship through works such as Shuowen Jiezi Zhu(Annotated Explanation of Script and Elucidation of Characters)(Commentary on Shuowen Jiezi).His academic resonance with Wang Niansun and textual collation debates with Gu Qianli reflect the academic tensions among Qing Dynasty scholars.By analyzing his exchange trajectory and academic interactions,this study reveals the openness and mobility of the Jiangnan academic circle during the Qianlong-Jiaqing period,as well as how scholars shaped the academic ecology through regional collaboration and ideological collisions,providing a typical case for understanding academic inheritance and regional cultural interactions in the Qing Dynasty.关键词
