Abstract

Inbreeding depression typically reduces progeny fitness,while transgressive segregation enables offspring traits to surpass those of their parents.Conventional sugarcane breeding primarily develops new varieties by crossing elite parents,although inbreeding has also been employed to cultivate some important parental lines and superior varieties.In this study,five sugarcane parents(CP82-1529,Dezhe9388,Yuetang00236,Yunrui12399,and Yunzhe0551)characterized by early maturity and high sugar content were used to generate self-pollinated F1 populations.Brix values of the parents and populations measured in December were analyzed as trait indicators.The results revealed that the coefficient of variation for Brix in the self-pollinated F1 populations ranged from 6.78%to 10.21%,with no extreme high or low values observed.The frequency distributions showed continuous normal patterns,indicating that Brix is a quantitative trait controlled by multiple genes rather than a single gene.The mean Brix values of all five self-pollinated F1 populations were lower than those of their corresponding parents,demonstrating widespread inbreeding depression.However,transgressive segregants accounted for 0.54%to 6.31%of the self-pollinated F1 populations,with Brix values ranging from 21.17%to 22.83%.The maximum increase in individual plant Brix over the parental values varied from 0.41%to 1.51%(absolute values).Among the parents,Yuetang00236 exhibited the greatest transgressive potential and produced the highest proportion of transgressive segregants through selfing,highlighting its value as a key parental line for enhancing high-sugar traits in sugarcane.These findings provide a reference for utilizing self-pollinated F1 populations in sugarcane for selecting high-sugar transgressive individuals,optimizing cross combinations,developing specialized high-sugar parents,and conducting genetic research.
