Abstract
To investigate the cause of the failure of a neck fracture in a 2205 duplex stainless steel flange at an oilfield site,a systematic analysis was conducted using macroscopic morphological observation,chemical composition analysis,mechanical property testing,metallographic characterization,and EDS examination.The results indicate that the flange's chemical composition conforms to the ASTM A182-2015 standard,but significant defects exist in its mechanical properties.Specifically,the elongation and reduction of area fall below specified requirements,and the impact energy at-20℃is less than 5 J,indicating pronounced brittleness.Microstructure analysis shows that there is elemental segregation of Cr and Mo in the ferrite phase leading to precipitation of rich Cr-Mo phases.This causes poor Cr distribution at grain boundaries which promotes susceptibility to intergranular corrosion and disrupts the equilibrium between ferrite and austenite phases.The fracture surface exhibits characteristics typical of brittle fracture with surface detection of corrosion products associated with Cl-and O2.A comprehensive evaluation concludes that excessive precipitation of phases and imbalance in ferrite-austenite ratio are main factors contributing to material embrittlement while corrosive marine environment,particularly presence of Cl⁻and O2,acts as external triggering factor.The synergistic effect of these internal and external factors ultimately resulted in brittle failure of the flange.This provides technical support for ensuring safe application and failure prevention of 2205 duplex stainless steel flanges.关键词
