摘要
Abstract
Background:Hypertension,a prevalent cardiovascular disorder, significantly increases the risk of stroke, heart disease, and kidney failure.Although pharmacological antihypertensive agents are the standard treatment, they are often associated with adverse effects and long-term dependency, prompting interest in herbal medicines as alternative or adjunctive therapies.
Objective:To review the efficacy, safety, and mechanisms of action of various herbal medicines in the management of hypertension, with emphasis on updated evidence up to 2025.
Methods:A comprehensive literature review was conducted, evaluating recent preclinical and clinical studies on commonly used antihypertensive herbs, including Allium sativum(Garlic),Hibiscus sabdariffa(Hibiscus),Olea europaea(Olive leaf),and Crataegus spp.(Hawthorn).Mechanistic pathways, clinical outcomes, safety profiles, and limitations were analysed, alongside considerations for herb-drug interactions and formulation standardization.
Results:Evidence indicates that these herbal remedies may lower both systolic and diastolic blood pressure through multiple mechanisms, such as vasodilation, reduction of peripheral vascular resistance,angiotensin-converting enzyme(ACE)inhibition, and modulation of inflammatory responses.Clinical trials report promising efficacy with generally fewer side effects than conventional drugs. However, inconsistencies in study design, dosage, treatment duration, and product standardization,as well as the potential for herb-drug interactions, limit definitive conclusions.
Conclusion:Herbal medicines demonstrate potential as safe and effective adjuncts or alternatives to conven-tional antihypertensive therapies.Rigorous clinical trials, standardized formulations, and regulatory oversight are essential to confirm their long-term safety and therapeutic consistency.Integration of herbal treatments with conventional approaches, under medical supervision, may enhance hypertension management outcomes.关键词
