Abstract

Objective To explore the impact of school belongingness on problematic internet use among junior high school students,and investigate the mediating roles of self-esteem and coping styles between them.Methods A cluster random sampling method was employed to conduct a questionnaire survey among 750 junior high school students in Changqing District,Jinan.The assessment tools included the school belongingness scale,the adolescent coping style scale,the Rosenberg self-esteem scale,and the junior high school students'problematic internet use scale.A total of 736 valid questionnaires were collected.Correlation analysis was used to examine relationships among variables,and multiple regression analysis and the Bootstrap method were applied to analyze and test the mediating effects.Results School belongingness,self-esteem,and coping styles were significantly positively correlated with one another,and all three were significantly negatively correlated with problematic internet use.School belongingness exerted a significant direct predictive effect on problematic internet use(β=-0.179,P<0.001).Self-esteem and coping styles each played a partial mediating role in the association,between school belongingness and problematic internet use,and they jointly formed a chain mediating effect.The specific mediating pathways were as follows:school belongingness → self-esteem → problematic internet use,with an effect value of-0.081 7(95%CI:-0.146 1 to-0.019 7),accounting for 20.44%of the total effect;school belongingness → coping styles →problematic internet use,with an effect value of-0.086 1(95%CI:-0.128 5 to-0.046 7),accounting for 21.52%of the total effect;school belongingness → self-esteem → coping styles → problematic internet use,with an effect value of-0.041 5(95%CI:-0.064 4 to-0.021 0),accounting for 10.40%of the total effect.Conclusion School belongingness can not only directly affect the problematic internet use among junior high school students,but also indirectly exert effects through the partial mediating roles of self-esteem and coping styles,as well as their chain mediating effect.
