Abstract

Focusing on the lack of green functional packaging materials,straw nanocellulose(SNC)and cork particles were utilized as raw materials to prepare straw nanocellulose/cork particles composite paperboard(SNC/C)through pouring and hot pressing,followed by coating with hydrophobic modified hydroxypropyl starch acetate(HPSA),resulting in a high-strengthen,waterproof,and thermal insulation straw nanocellulose/cork particles/hydroxypropyl starch acetate(SNC/C/H)composite cardboard.The mechanical properties,water resistance,thermal insulation,biodegradability and environmental friendliness were evaluated.The results showed that when the mass ratio of SNC to cork particles was 7∶3 and the HPSA coating amount was 10 g/m2,the obtained material SNC/C/H10 exhibited excellent comprehensive properties.The tensile strength was 23.85 MPa,the elongation at break was 12.18%,the initial water contact angle was 83°,the water contact angle existed for 50 min,and the water vapor transmission rate was 14.28 g/(m2·h),which was better than the commercial paper-based packaging materials.In addition,SNC/C/H10 achieved a biodegradation rate of 63.52%at 10 weeks,and it completely disappeared in soil environments after 10 weeks of exposure.It also demonstrated low environmental load across multiple environmental dimensions,such as fossil depletion,climate change,freshwater ecotoxicity,terrestrial ecotoxicity,terrestrial acidification,and human toxicity,highlighting significant potential for green packaging applications.This held important value for developing environmentally friendly packaging materials and promoted the sustainable development of packaging industry.
