Estimation of surface suspended sediment concentration in the Yangtze River using Sentinel-2 MSI data

Abstract
To address the limitations of traditional in situ suspended sediment concentration(SSC)measure-ments,including high costs and restricted spatial coverage,a novel river surface SSC inversion method is de-veloped using Sentinel-2 satellite data.By integrating the Forel-Ule index water classification system with tur-bidity-adaptive spectral,an SSC inversion model applicable to varying turbidity conditions has been estab-lished.Validation results demonstrate high model accuracy,the root mean square error is 24.87 g/m3,with an average relative error of 51.91%,and strong correlation with measurement data in hydrological stations.Time-series analysis from 2017 to 2021 reveals distinct spatiotemporal SSC patterns in the Yangtze River main-stream:temporally,it shows cyclic variations with high values during flood seasons and low values in non-flood seasons;spatially,it shows the gradient pattern with higher SSC in east and lower in west reaches.关键词
