Effects of subsurface drip irrigation water-phosphorus coupling on growth and quality of alfalfa

Abstract
Determining optimal irrigation schedules and phosphorus(P)application rates is of great scientific significance for promoting water conservation,enhancing forage quality,and improving pro-duction efficiency in China's forage industry.Taking subsurface drip irrigation(SDI)in Inner Mongo-lia as the subject,a two-factor randomized complete block design was employed,setting up three irri-gation levels(expressed as percentages of field capacity)and three P application rates,with conven-tional surface irrigation treatment as the control(total of 10 treatments).The research aimed to investi-gate the effects of water-P coupling on the alfalfa growth traits,yield,forage quality,and water re-source use efficiency.Results show that under SDI,alfalfa dry hay yield increases significantly with in-creasing irrigation amount(P<0.05),whereas the water use efficiency(WUE)exhibited a trend of in-itial increase followed by a decrease with the increase in irrigation amount.Yield,crude protein(CP)content,and WUE all first increased with P application up to a threshold(120 kg/hm2),after which they declined.Crude fiber(CF),neutral detergent fiber(NDF),and acid detergent fiber(ADF)ex-hibited a trend of decreasing first and then increasing with the increase in phosphorus application.The Phosphorus partial productivity(Pp)decreased monotonically with increasing P input.Among all treat-ments,the medium irrigation level combined with moderate P application(120 kg/hm2)notably im-prove forage quality:in the first cutting,CP content increases by 12.3%and 14.2%compared to high and low P levels,respectively(P<0.05).While the CF content decreases by 7.5%and 13.9%.In the second cutting,the CP increases by 9.0%and 2.8%compared to the high and low phosphorus treat-ments,while the CF decreases by 12.1%and 8.6%,respectively.The maximum dry hay yield under SDI reaches 10,255.98 kg/hm2,with peak values of WUE(2.98 kg/m3)and Pp(108.14 kg/kg).Compared with traditional surface irrigation,SDI enhances the yield by 10.7%-49.5%,and the WUE by 19.1%-48.7%,and Pp by 14.0%-152.9%,respecitively.Taking into account the object of water conservation,yield stability,and forage quality improvement,it is recommended that the upper and lower limits for alfalfa irrigation regime maintaining soil moisture at 65%-90%of field capacity,com-bined with a P application rate of 120 kg/hm2.关键词
