Abstract

The river-lake connection between Yangtze River and Poyang Lake has changed significantly since 2003.In autumn,the water level of the Poyang Lake wetland has been steadily declining,the eleva-tion of meadow wetland vegetation has been continuously decreasing and its distribution range has been gradually expanding.The Polygonum criopolitanum community in the 9-12 m elevation zone,compris-ing most of the Duchang Migratory Bird Reserve has expanded significantly,resulting in a substantial decrease in the area of mudflats,shallow water and other habitats.Consequently,the habitat structure for overwintering migratory birds has undergone significant change.In this study,we explored the impact of the expanding P.criopolitanum cover in the wetlands of Poyang Lake on the population size of goose species,aiming to provide a scientific basis for conserving overwintering migratory birds in river-lake wetlands.Based on the field surveys of the P.criopolitanum community in 2018,controlled experiments and statistical modeling were used to simulate the growth of P.criopolitanum within the 9-12 m eleva-tion zone of Poyang Lake wetland after 2003.The Logistic equation was used to generate a growth curve for analysis of growth characteristics and the effect on goose populations.Results show that there were significant differences in the growth rate and biomass accumulation of P.criopolitanum across different el-evation zones.The timing of river shoal emergence and the effective growth period(the time spanning from the emergence date to late November when the temperature drops to below 10℃)were the key fac-tors.River shoals in the 12 m elevation zone were exposed in early October,and P.criopolitanum exhibit-ed a high growth rate and accumulated biomass rapidly until late November.The exposure time of the riv-er shoals in the 10-11 m elevation zone was in mid-October,and the rates of P.criopolitanum growth and biomass accumulation were slightly lower than in the 12 m elevation zone.The growth of P.criopolita-num in the 10-11 m elevation zones aligns with the wintering rhythm of wild geese,providing them with plentiful food resources.In contrast,the shoals in the 9 m elevation zone were not exposed until the end of October.The growth period of P.criopolitanum was only one month,growth rate was slow and bio-mass accumulation was only about 20%of that of in the 12 m elevation zone.As the relationship between the river and the lake continues to change,the low-water situation in Poyang Lake has intensified and the emergence of the 9-12 m elevation zones is occurring earlier.P.criopolitanum withers before the arrival of wild geese,leading to a reduction in food resources.Continued research is needed on how to adjust the river-lake relationship to establish ecologically appropriate water level fluctuations in the Poyang Lake wetlands.
