Abstract

The global soil acidification problem is becoming increasingly serious,having a significant impact on the stability of soil carbon stocks and greenhouse gas emissions.This study systematically assessed the effects of organic amendments(biochar and organic fertilizers)on carbon sequestration and emission reduction in different acidic soils through a Meta-analysis.The results indicated that both biochar and organic fertilizers significantly enhanced soil organic carbon storage,with increases of 31.0%and 26.9%,respectively.However,their effectiveness was regulated by environmental conditions and application strategies:biochar showed the best enhancement under moderate temperatures(8-16 ℃),moderate recipitation(600-1200 mm),and low initial organic carbon(≤12 g/kg),achieving increases of 20.0%—57.5%,with an enhancement range in acidic soils(pH 4.5-6.5)of 7.4%—25.7%,and 40.9%in neutral soils(pH 6.5-7.5).Straw-based biochar(increased by 34.1%)and high application rates(>40 t/hm2)perform particularly well;while organic fertilizers showed significant enhancement effects at high temperatures(>16℃)and high precipitation(>1200 mm),with increases of 34.2%and 27.8%,respectively.The enhancement range in acidic soils was 13.2%-27.1%,and 32.7%in neutral soils.Organic fertilizers of animal and other sources(increased by 29%-49%)and those applied over a long term(>10 years)showed better results.The soil organic carbon storage under both types of organic amendments increased with the amount of carbon input.It was noteworthy that while biochar slightly increased CO2 emissions(4.6%),it significantly reduced CH4 emissions(26.6%),especially in straw-based,low-temperature,or alkaline soils(pH>7.5).Organic fertilizers,on the other hand,simultaneously increased CO2(12.4%)and CH4 emissions(56.4%),with the greenhouse effect being more pronounced under high-temperature and high-humidity conditions,and with animal-sourced nitrogen and high nitrogen application rates.Analysis of the main controlling factors suggested that the carbon sequestration effectiveness of biochar was mainly driven by the application amount(relative explanatory rate 28.21%)and initial organic carbon,while the carbon emission from organic fertilizers was dominated by their usage(relative explanatory rate 14.66%)and initial soil organic carbon.This study provided important data support and theoretical basis for carbon management strategies in different acidic agricultural soils.
