From Regional Realism to Allegorical Narrative:On the Narrative Transformation in Zhao Benfu's Novels Set Along the Ancient Course of the Yellow River
摘要
Abstract
Zhao Benfu's fiction is deeply rooted in the cultural landscape of the Ancient Course of the Yellow River in northern Jiangsu.Centered on the belief in the land, his work exhibits a narrative shift from regional realism to universal human allegory.Early works such as Dry Ruts and Swordsman and Woman depict local geography and folkways, transforming regional symbols—"three feet of yellow sand","Zhuangmo(a thick, coarse pancake)"—into vessels of cultural memory. His mid-term work of the"Earth Mother Trilogy"uses the century-spanning transformations of Caoerwa Village as a microcosm to analyze the ethical alienation and predicaments of modernity in the process of civilizational reconstruction. His recent works,Tianlou Village and A Fish in the Desert, employ allegorical images such as"the longevity code of Tianlou Village"and"a giant carp in the desert"to elevate local experience into philosophical reflection on the endurance of civilization and the tenacity of life. This narrative evolution continues his customary"praising"of the cultural heritage of the Ancient Course of the Yellow River, while also offering a literary blueprint for contemporary regional writing.关键词
