Effects of electrode geometric parameters and tissue dielectric properties on sensitivity of impedance measurements in high-voltage pulsed electric field ablation

Abstract
Objective To investigate the effects of electrode geometric parameters and tissue dielectric properties on impedance measurement sensitivity during high-voltage pulsed electric field ablation,thereby providing a theoretical basis for selecting electrode pairs for impedance spectrum measurement in this procedure.Methods Firstly,a three-dimensional finite element model was established based on COMSOL Multiphysics 6.2 to simulate the current density field under homogeneous tissue conditions by varying key parameters such as tissue conductivity,relative permittivity,electrode spacing and exposure length.Subsequently,the spatial characteristics of the sensitivity distribution were quantified using a threshold segmentation algorithm,and the sensitivity distribution within the impedance-effective measurement region was analyzed.Finally,the influence of tissue heterogeneity on the sensitivity distribution was systematically investigated by introducing perturbation zones with different conductivity gradients into the model to simulate heterogeneous tissue conditions.Results Variations in the dielectric parameters(σ,εr)of homogeneous tissue showed no significant effects on the distribution of impedance measurement sensitivity.Electrode spacing was positively correlated with the area of the effective impedance measurement region,while measurement sensitivity decreased significantly when the spacing exceeded 4.0 cm;electrode exposure length was positively correlated with the cross-sectional area of the effective impedance measurement region in the longitudinal plane.In heterogeneous tissue,an increase in local conductivity significantly enhanced the impedance measurement sensitivity in that region.Conclusion The quantitative influences of tissue dielectric parameters and electrode geometric parameters on the effective impedance measurement area are revealed during high-voltage pulsed electric field ablation,providing references for selecting electrode pairs for impedance spectrum measurement in irreversible electroporation therapy.[Chinese Medical Equipment Journal,2026,47(1):14-20].关键词
