Epidemiological characteristics of human adenovirus public health emergencies in China from 2007 to 2024

Abstract

This study describes public health emergencies due to human adenovirus infections in China,compares their epide-miological characteristics,and analyzes the factors affecting the scale and severity,to provide a reference for the handling of out-breaks.Public health emergencies due to human adenovirus that met the study criteria were collected via the Public Health Emergency Management Information System.Differences in rates were compared with the x2 test or Fisher's exact test,differences in means were compared with the Kruskal-Wallis test,and factors influencing the scale and severity were analyzed with logistic regression.A total of 84 public health emergencies due to human adenovirus infection occurred in 2007-2024,and the peak(24 reported outbreaks)oc-curred in 2019.Comparison by age indicated that outbreaks in minors had a lower mean attack rate,fewer mean hospitalizations,and a shorter mean incidence-intervention time interval.Comparison by place of occurrence indicated that outbreaks in hospitals had a lower mean attack rate and a higher mean hospitalization rate than outbreaks in other sites,which had more mean cases,and a longer mean du-ration of outbreaks and incidence-intervention time interval.Comparison by incidence-intervention time intervals indicated that out-breaks with an interval of ≤ 10 days had fewer mean cases,a lower mean attack rate,a shorter duration of outbreaks.Multivariate logistic regression revealed that outbreaks with an incidence-intervention time interval>10 days and an outbreak duration>11 days had larger scale,and outbreaks with a duration greater than 11 days were more severe.The nationwide human adenovirus public health emergency exhibited a gradually increasing trend that peaked in 2019.The prevention and control of outbreaks were effective in public places,such as schools,but not in certain closed places,such as drug rehabilitation centers and construction sites.Multi-sectoral collaboration in out-break management should be further promoted to improve the existing human adenovirus surveillance and response system.
