Abstract

Starting from the phenomenon that the quality of wild medicinal materials is often superior to that of cultivated ones,this study investigates the fertility differences between cultivated and wild soils in the main production areas of Hedysari Radix in Gansu Province.It aims to explain the cause of"high quality under low fertility"from the perspective of the soil environment,thereby providing a basis for improving the quality of cultivated Hedysari Radix through ecological cultivation.A total of 37 soil samples were collected from major production areas including Wudu,Tanchang,and Dingxi in Gansu Province.The contents of total nitrogen(TN),total phosphorus(TP),total potassium(TK),organic matter(OM),available phosphorus(AP),and available potassium(AK)were determined.Principal Component Analysis(PCA)was employed to calculate the Integrated Fertility Index(IFI).Variance analysis,correlation analysis,and regression analysis were used to compare fertility differences among regions and between cultivated and wild soils.The mean soil IFI values in Wudu,Tanchang,and Dingxi were 0.263 0,0.276 2,and 0.264 0,respectively,all indicating a medium fertility level.The mean IFI of cultivated soils(0.298)was significantly higher than that of wild soils(0.251),and a significant difference(P<0.05)was observed in TP content between them.PCA revealed no fundamental structural differences in soil fertility between cultivated and wild habitats.Although cultivation practices increase the TP content and overall soil fertility,they do not alter the inherent soil fertility structure.The low-phosphorus stress environment formed by the long-term adaptation of wild Hedysari Radix may be the key driver for the accumulation of secondary metabolites,thereby achieving high quality.Therefore,implementing a fertilization strategy of"controlling phosphorus application while stabilizing nitrogen and potassium"to mimic the low-phosphorus environment of wild soils could be a viable approach to enhance the medicinal quality of cultivated Hedysari Radix.
