Abstract

Three representative types of surfactants,i.e.,cationic,anionic,and nonionic,were employed to modify alkali-activated slag binders.The early-age properties of the specimens were systematically characterized.The regulation mechanism of different surfactants on the air bubble distri-bution,structure of the electrical double layer above hydrate surface,and chloride binding behavior in alkali-activated slag binders were deeply explored.The results demonstrate that surfactant incorporation effectively alters the flowability of alkali-activated slag binders,prolongs setting time,and mitigates autogenous shrinkage.Anionic or nonionic surfactants tend to introduce a substantial amount of over-sized air voids(diameter>560 μm),leading to a noticeable reduction in the compressive strength of al-kali-activated slag binders.In contrast,an appropriate dosage of cationic surfactants primarily induces the formation of fine microbubbles(diameter<18 μm),causing insignificant mechanical loss while sim-ultaneously enhancing both the physical adsorption and chemical binding of chloride ions through opti-mization of the electrical double layer structure.This study provides new insights into the regulation of early-age performance and the improvement of chloride resistance in alkali-activated materials.
