Abstract

The protection project for the plateau surface of the Loess Plateau is a crucial measure for ecological management in the Yellow River Basin.It is of great significance for controlling the soil erosion and maintaining the stability of the plateau surface.Taking the protection project for the plateau surface in Daning County as an example,this study systematically studies the comprehensive technical approaches for the protection of the plateau surface by integrating engineering measures with hydrological calculations,based on the policy frameworks such as the Outline for the Ecological Protection and High-Quality Development in the Yellow River Basin.The project focuses on Taixian Yuan and Xiuyan Yuan in Xinshui Town and Sanduo Township with protection area of 21.6 km2,constructing ridge by gullies with total length of 20 km and reconstructing 7 retention ponds.Techniques such as ridge-type protection,runoff diversion,and flood detention were applied.Hydrological calculations and structural stability analysis were carried out in accordance with the standard for rainstorm of once-in-10 years(with the safety factor of foundation bearing capacity verification being 3 to 5 times).The results show that the ridge by gullies could effectively intercept runoff(with individual section length up to 630 m),and the design of retention ponds meet the requirements for irrigation and flood control(e.g.,the total storage capacity of the Hanjia Village retention pond is 450 m3,and the flow rate of the drainage pipe is 7.25 m/s).This research has provided a scientific basis for"stabilizing gully and protection of plateau surface"on the Loess Plateau and serves as a model for ecological restoration in similar regions.
